Couples & Family Therapy

From the first session, Laurie names this clearly: she is not here to help one person win. She is in the service of the relationship.

Couples Therapy

Name It

Most couples therapy avoids the real conversation. A good therapist — a really good one — names what is actually happening in the room. Not just what the couple is saying. What they are not saying. The thing that has kept the same fight going for three years.

Naming it is not confrontation. Done right, it is relief. It is the moment when a client exhales for the first time in months. The pattern that had no name becomes something they can both see. And once you can both see it, you can both do something about it.

Work It

Here is what most people get wrong about couples therapy: they think the therapist’s job is to tell them who is right. It is not. The job is to hold the space where both people can get honest about what they actually need — and then figure out if they are willing and able to meet each other there.

That is not a soft process. It is one of the hardest things two people can do. Laurie guides it with curiosity, compassion, and zero tolerance for avoidance.

Close the Loop

Every single session with Laurie ends the same way. She pulls together what was evoked. She names what is on the table. She asks: what will each of you do with this before we meet again? Clients do not leave processing. They leave with a task. Something specific. Something they chose.

Laurie does not hand them the answer. She evokes it from them and then holds them to it. Because the loop does not close when the therapist wraps things up neatly. It closes when the client does something with what happened in the room.
